Reverend Joseph Matthew's Grave

DescriptionThe ornate gravestone and grave of Reverend Joseph Matthews in the St Saviours cemetery at Kaitaia.
Born at Deddington in Oxfordshire England in 1908, the Reverend Joseph Matthews came to New Zealand with the Church Missionary Society (CMS). He married Mary Ann Davis in 1833 and established the Kaitaia Mission Station in 1834 with William Puckey.
Reverend Matthews died on the 3rd of November, 1895. He was 87 years of age and and was buried at Kaitaia at the site of the altar of his old church, as was his wish.
