DescriptionA man examining a stone wall outdoors. In the late 1840s, Henry Holman built a flax mill at the base of the Tikipunga hill. In 1869 Francis Wood established a flour mill in the same spot near the stream in Brewery Bridge Road, off Waiatawa Road in Whangarei. The site was later used for a brewery. Hand mills were used to grind flour in the very early settlement days. Robert Mair later used a water wheel driven by a stream to grind flour. This was situated near his residence Deveron located off what is now Mair Street.
