DescriptionThe origin of the name Ngunguru as documented by a Ngati Wai elder is as follows: Puhimoanariki, fled from the Whakatane area to Ngapuhi. On his way, he was told by Manaia "You may meet with disaster from the tides that thunder there o Puhi".
Remembering the caution, Puhi came to a place he called Taiharuru, which means Thundering Tides. From there, he came to another where he heard the tides thundering continuously, so he called it Ngunguru, which means 'Rumble'.
The Ngunguru Sandspit is part of the original Horahora No 1 Block which was sub-divided into two parts in 1896.
