DescriptionAn elderly man, Reverend Joseph Matthews, in a wheeled bed, with his grand-daughter Eva Matthews ready to push him, outside St Saviours church.
The Reverend Joseph Matthews established the Kaitaia Mission Station in 1834 with William Puckey. In 1886 work began on Saint Saviours Church, named after the church in England where Joseph had worshipped as a boy. Construction of the church took six months to complete. It was built of Kauri timber, pit-sawn at Whangaroa. The new church was consecrated by Bishop Cowrie on 1 May 1887. Reverend Matthews died shortly after this photograph was taken, on the 3rd of November, 1895.
