Mrs Edith Spender in Her Garden

DescriptionBorn in 1889, Frances Edith Spender (nee Millar) was known as Edith or Edie. A grand-daughter of James Reddy and Jane Takatowi Clendon, Edith grew up in Rawene, where her father Thomas Lumsden Millar was the postmaster. She had two sons with her first husband David Ingram. Edith's second husband was Paul Spender, an enterprising Rawene businessman who established Rawene Motors. When her husband died in 1942, Edith took over the running of the business. In the mid 1960s, Edith moved to Whangarei where she was involved in many community groups and organisations. She passed away in 1986 aged 97.
