16th Aug 2014 10:16AMEugene and Uranie Cafler's Whangarei home "Sans Souci" was located on the waterfront of Whangarei's town basin. It's grounds extended inland to where Pak n Save is now (2014) located. Eugene Cafler was a Frenchman who established a hotel, store and post office in the earliest days of Whangarei's settlement by Europeans. The house had 12 rooms and a carefully laid out and maintained garden. Located in the garden were stables, cowshed, carpenter's shop, wash house, bath house, summer houses, poultry houses, a vineyard and an orchard.
Information from the book Whangarei: The Founding Years by Nancy Preece Pickmere.
